Oxford Sheldonian Theatre photo copyrighted by: Brian McMorrow The shape of the building itself is modelled on the
open-air Theatre of Marcellus in Rome. In 1994 the Theatre was described by the European
Commission as "one of the architectural jewels of Oxford". It was designed as a place for "the enactment of
university business", as well as ceremonies which had
previously taken place in the University Church of St Mary the Virgin.
