Pembroke Castle Built photo copyrighted by: Brian McMorrow Pembroke is also noteworthy as the only castle in Britain to be built over a natural cavern, a large cave known as the Wogan. In 1199, William Marshal was made Earl of Pembroke. He began to reconstruct the castle in stone, and started work on a large cylindrical tower or keep, the most impressive of its kind in Britain.
