Phnom Penh Independence Monument photo copyrighted by: Brian McMorrow Built in 1958, the monument commemorates Cambodia's indpendence from France, and is designed in the form of a lotus-shaped stupa, the likes of which can be found all over the Angkor Wat region. It now also serves as a monument to Cambodia's war dead. Trespassing onto the monument is illegal. The best view is from across the street.
