The Citadel is one of the world's greatest monuments to medieval warfare, as well as a highly visible landmark on Cairo's eastern skyline. The Citadel is a famous Cairo landmark built by the Muslim caliph who defeated the Crusaders, between 1176 and 1183. It was then the center of Egyptian government until Khedive Ismail moved to the new Abdeen palace in 1860.
