Saint George Castle Building photo copyrighted by: Brian McMorrow saint george castle is consists of the castle proper, some buildings (including the ruins of the Royal Palace),
gardens and a large square with terraces to observe Lisbon.
Originally built by the Visigoths and later named after King Joao I, the castle, along
with much of Lisbon, was severely damaged by a devastating earthquake in 1755.
The 110m/361ft high hill on which the castle stands also constitutes the central starting
point of Lisbon's development.
