Ditan Park and its Temple of the Earth lie just north of the Lama Temple. Built in 1530, it had a similar purpose to the Temple of Heaven. Ming and Qing emperors travelled here to make sacrifices each year on the summer solstice. Ordinary citizens were allowed on the grounds for the first time only after 1911.
