Latvia is located in northeastern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, between Sweden and
Russia. It was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 as a result of a secret pact
between Hitler and Stalin.
It regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Situated on the Baltic coast,
it is a low-lying country with large forests that supply timber for construction and paper
industries.
